Right now is perhaps the worst time in history to be in college for various reasons, the most important reason being that pursuing a college degree has become almost prohibitively expensive.
If you did manage to pay for college, there are various personal and miscellaneous expenses that often aren’t covered by scholarships, loans, or your parents. As such, one of the easiest ways to make money in your spare time is by using the Internet. Here are a few ideas that worked for me.
1- Do freelance work.
The world of freelance work has become enhanced ten-fold with the growing popularity of the Internet. As such, you’ll never be short on little jobs that you can do in your spare time. One particular niche that worked for me was freelance or contract manuscript editing for e-publishers. Most new publishing companies, especially smaller ones that only publish e-books, do not have full-time staff, and thus rely on freelance copyeditors. After you contact them with your credentials and background, they will send you a manuscript of a novel, which you edit according to a particular deadline and are paid by the page or the word. Other freelance areas include article writing, designing websites, and taking photos.
2- Advertise tutoring services online.
If you are a college student, chances are that you are an expert in some particular field, or have a strong enough command of various academic subjects that you can teach these subjects at a lower level. If you also enjoy working with kids or peers, then becoming a part-time tutor is a great way to earn extra money. One of the best ways to offer your services as a tutor is to post a profile on the local tutor website WyzAnt.com.
3- Sell textbooks and other items online.
I’m not sure about you, but when I first began attending college, after a semester or two, my dorm room was cluttered with items that I had no use for. Whether it was textbooks from last semester or a piece of furniture or household item my parents had given me but I never used, I had tons of extra stuff that was useless to me but was potential needed by others. Instead of selling old textbooks at the school bookstore, where you’ll invariably get ripped off, sell them and other items on popular auction/resell sites like Facebook Marketplace, EBay, Amazon, and others.
4- Use sites like Fiverr.
Fiverr is a new concept that takes the idea of freelancing and makes it “social.” Think of any service that you are willing to do for $5, whether it is something serious or silly, and post it on the site, much like you would tweet something on Twitter. Some examples of the sillier things that Fiverr users do are mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article and include burning an a small paper effigy of the buyer’s enemy and Photoshopping monsters into family photos.
There are millions of ways to make money while in college, but thanks to the Internet, you can do so more efficiently such that you’ll have plenty of time to study while still making time to have fun with friends. Good luck!
